About Santiniketan Leather Products
“She is our own, the darling of our hearts, Santiniketan” – Rabindranath Tagore
From the verdant Gangetic plains and home to one of the most renowned university towns in the world, we bring to you an exquisite range of hand made leather products. We introduce to you the celebrated Santiniketan Leather Products. Santiniketan is a vibrant and multicultural town in the Birbhum district in the Eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Nestled in the bucolic hinterland 170 KM north west of Kolkata, Santiniketan was home to the polymath Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore; and this is where Kabiguru (literally master poet) Tagore conceptualized and instituted the world renowned Visva Bharathi University. Besides being a seat of higher learning in humanities, sciences, fine and performing arts et al, the university has provided an ecosystem to nurture the local crafts and handlooms. The tribal art forms – be it crafts like woodwork, leather products, terracotta, kantha stitch or performing arts forms like Baul songs, folk dance etc have received a shot in the arm due to efforts by the University. The Basant and Poush Utsavs are a hunting ground for exquisite handicrafts by local artisans.
The leather accessories are made with vegetable tanned leather. The motifs are usually traditional motifs including local fauna, floral patterns and sometime geometrical patterns. The printing is done using embossed batik work. The pigments used are either PCP free chemicals or vegetable extracts.
